Collection: 17th Century Books

Books that have survived from the 1600s are genuinely rare, having outlasted plague, fire, and three and a half centuries of ordinary wear. Our collection spans Latin classical texts, religious and devotional works, and English poetry from the Restoration period, with the oldest pieces dating back to the reign of James I. For more antiquarian finds, our Rare Books collection is worth exploring too.

17th Century Books: the rarest corner of our shop

“A good book is the precious lifeblood of a master spirit, embalmed and treasured up on purpose to a life beyond life.”

— John Milton, Areopagitica, 1644

Genuinely 17th century books are hard to come by, having survived the better part of four centuries before ever reaching our shelves. What turns up varies enormously: a slim volume of Restoration poetry, a small Latin schoolbook, a family Bible bound to last generations. Many were originally printed in Latin, the working language of scholars and clergy at the time, which can make them feel more like historical artefacts than books meant to be read cover to cover today. Every one carries some trace of its own journey, whether that's a later rebinding, a previous owner's signature, or simply the wear of centuries of handling.

Our 17th century collection includes classical Latin texts, religious and devotional works, and English poetry, in genuinely antique, centuries-old copies.

Each book is individually photographed and described, with condition and any repairs noted clearly in the listing so you always know what you're buying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of 17th century books do you have available?

We carry a changing selection of 17th century books, including classical Latin texts, religious works and English poetry. It's always worth checking back as we add more.

Do you have 17th century novels?

The novel as we know it today barely existed yet in the 1600s. What survives from this period is mostly poetry, classical texts, religious writing and history, which is what most of our 17th century stock reflects.

Are these books written in English?

Not always. Many surviving books from this period, especially classical and scholarly works, were originally printed in Latin. We note the language clearly in each listing.

Are these books genuinely antique, or modern reprints?

Every book in this collection dates from the 1600s, so they're all genuinely antique rather than modern reprints.

Are 17th century books valuable, and what condition are they in?

Value depends heavily on the specific title, edition and condition, and rarity alone doesn't guarantee a high price. Given their age, some wear, rebinding or repair is normal and expected; we describe and photograph the condition of every book clearly so you know exactly what you're buying.

Do you have first editions from the 17th century?

Some of our 17th century stock includes genuine first editions, noted individually in the listing where confirmed.

Are 17th century books a good gift?

Yes, a genuinely antique book makes a memorable gift for a serious collector or history lover, though it's worth checking the recipient's specific interests first given how specialised books from this era can be.

Do you ship 17th century books internationally?

Yes, we ship worldwide with tracked delivery, and antique books are packaged with extra care to protect bindings and pages in transit.
