Collection: J. M. Barrie Books

Most people know J. M. Barrie as the creator of Peter Pan, but the author himself spent far longer writing about the Scotland he grew up in. His early fame came from Thrums, a fictional weaving town modelled on his own birthplace of Kirriemuir, and readers drawn to that same close, small-town Scottish voice may enjoy our Scottish Books collection too.

“Second to the right, and then straight on till morning.”

— Peter Pan, in Peter and Wendy

Peter Pan, the boy who wouldn't grow up, gave the world Neverland, Tinker Bell and the Darling children, and remains one of the most enduring stories in children's literature, still adapted for stage and screen more than a century after Barrie wrote it. But long before any of that, he was best known for a fictional Scottish town called Thrums, close enough to his real childhood home of Kirriemuir that early readers had no trouble recognising it. Books like A Window in Thrums and Auld Licht Idylls drew on the weavers, ministers and gossiping neighbours he'd grown up around, and they made him a literary name years before Peter Pan existed in any form.

That's very much the tone across our stock: gently comic, deeply attached to small-town Scottish life, and often more interested in character than plot. Alongside the Thrums novels, we typically carry his later fiction and memoirs, including Tommy and Grizel, My Lady Nicotine, and his affectionate portrait of his own mother, Margaret Ogilvy, along with several of his plays. It's a different side of Barrie to the one most people expect, and for many readers it's the more rewarding one.

Editions vary in age and condition, and we photograph and describe each one individually so you know what you're getting before you buy. New stock comes in regularly as we source it.
