Arthur Conan Doyle Books: Sherlock Holmes and the stories beyond him

“My name is Sherlock Holmes. It is my business to know what other people do not know.”

— Arthur Conan Doyle, The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle

Arthur Conan Doyle trained as a physician before turning to writing, and it was his old medical tutor, Joseph Bell, whose sharp observational skill inspired the character of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle grew so weary of his creation that he killed him off in 1893, only to bring him back eight years later after public outcry, one of literature's earliest and most famous author-versus-character battles.

Alongside the Holmes stories, Doyle wrote historical adventure novels such as Rodney Stone and The Refugees, drawing on his fascination with duelling, boxing and European history. We occasionally carry genuine first editions and illustrated sets when they come into stock, alongside more accessible later printings.

Each book is inspected and described individually, with any wear, foxing or previous ownership marks noted clearly in the listing, so you know exactly what you're buying before it arrives.
