Collection: 18th Century Books
The 1700s saw an explosion in English-language print, from Pope and Swift to the first daily newspapers, and much more of it survives today than from the century before. Our collection spans Georgian poetry, legal and constitutional history, travel writing, and antiquarian studies of Scotland and England, with the oldest pieces dating from the reign of Queen Anne. For earlier finds, our 17th Century Books collection is worth exploring too.

18th Century Books: the Georgian age of poetry, politics, and print
“A little learning is a dangerous thing; drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring.”
— Alexander Pope, An Essay on Criticism, 1711
Much of what survives from the 1700s reflects a society working out who could vote, worship and speak freely, alongside a genuine appetite for verse and essay-writing that produced the poets still read today. A multi-volume set of a poet's collected works, rebound at some point across its two-and-a-half centuries, carries its own story of being read, shelved and passed down long after its first owner died. Legal, political and travel writing sit alongside the poetry too, giving a broader picture of Georgian life than verse alone.
Our 18th century collection includes Georgian poetry, legal and political writing, travel accounts, and antiquarian studies, in genuinely antique, centuries-old copies.
Each book is individually photographed and described, with condition and any repairs noted clearly in the listing so you always know what you're buying.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of 18th century books do you have available?
We carry a changing selection of 18th century books, including Georgian poetry, legal and political writing, travel accounts and antiquarian studies. It's always worth checking back as we add more.
Do you have 18th century novels?
Yes. The novel as a literary form only emerged in the early 1700s, and some of the earliest examples, including picaresque tales and comic adventures, are amongst what we stock from this period.
Are these books written in English?
Not always. Some of our 18th century stock, especially classical and continental works, was originally printed in Latin or French. We note the language clearly in each listing.
Are these books genuinely antique, or modern reprints?
Every book in this collection dates from the 1700s, so they're all genuinely antique rather than modern reprints.
Are 18th century books valuable, and what condition are they in?
Value depends heavily on the specific title, edition and condition, and rarity alone doesn't guarantee a high price. Given their age, some wear, rebinding or repair is normal and expected; we describe and photograph the condition of every book clearly so you know exactly what you're buying.
Do you have first editions from the 18th century?
Some of our 18th century stock includes genuine first editions, noted individually in the listing where confirmed.
Are 18th century books a good gift?
Yes, a genuinely antique book makes a memorable gift for a serious collector or history lover, though it's worth checking the recipient's specific interests first given how specialised books from this era can be.
Do you ship 18th century books internationally?
Yes, we ship worldwide with tracked delivery, and antique books are packaged with extra care to protect bindings and pages in transit.
