Much of what survives from the 1700s reflects a society working out who could vote, worship and speak freely, alongside a genuine appetite for verse and essay-writing that produced the poets still read today. A multi-volume set of a poet's collected works, rebound at some point across its two-and-a-half centuries, carries its own story of being read, shelved and passed down long after its first owner died. Legal, political and travel writing sit alongside the poetry too, giving a broader picture of Georgian life than verse alone.
