Our 19th century collection is the deepest of all five century collections by far, taking in Victorian novels and poetry alongside history, science, religion and foreign-language works from across the century. Alongside English classics from Dickens to Tennyson, expect the occasional surprise too: a Spanish edition of Don Quixote, a French devotional text, a German novel. Printing mechanised and literacy spread through the 1800s faster than in any century before it, and the sheer range of what survives reflects that growth. Literature and poetry make up the biggest share, from Victorian novels to collected poetical works, but history, science, religion and reference works are close behind. A good number were printed in French, German or Spanish rather than English, since many Victorian readers were comfortable in more than one language.
