Collection: 20th Century Books
Our 20th century collection is the largest we carry by a wide margin, spanning the reigns of five monarchs and two world wars, from Edwardian first editions to titles from the 1990s. Unlike our earlier centuries, not everything here is antique in the strict sense: books from the century's early decades are now over 100 years old, while later finds are vintage rather than antique, and each listing says which. For earlier finds, our 19th Century Books collection is worth exploring too.

20th Century Books: modern literature, history, science and more
“The only advice … is to take no advice, to follow your own instincts, to use your own reason, to come to your own conclusions.”
— Virginia Woolf, "How Should One Read a Book?", 1926
Many of our 20th century books carry the trace of someone else's life: a dedication written inside the cover, a name and date, sometimes a bookplate from a library or a gift inscribed decades ago. These small details are part of what makes a used copy different from a new one, a quiet record of who owned it before you did.
The range here is enormous: modern literature, history, science, biography, travel writing and reference works all sit within the century, alongside two world wars and everything that came after. If you know roughly what you're after, our genre collections such as Classic Fiction Novels, Biographies & Autobiographies and Travel & Exploration Books are a faster way in than scrolling this entire collection.
Each book is individually photographed and described in the listing, with any wear, foxing or restoration noted so you know exactly what you're buying. If you already know what you're looking for, whether that's an author, a title or a subject, our search bar at the top of the page is the fastest way to find it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What kinds of 20th century books do you have?
Our 20th century collection spans modern literature, history, science, biography, travel writing and reference works, plus much more.
Are these books antique or vintage?
Both. Books from the early 1900s are now genuinely antique (100 years or older), while later 20th century books are vintage rather than antique. Each listing makes clear which applies.
Do you have books by a specific 20th century author?
If you're after a particular author, our dedicated Agatha Christie, Ian Fleming, Evelyn Waugh and George Orwell Books collections are worth checking too.
How is condition assessed?
We photograph each book closely so you can see its binding, pages and wear before you buy. Condition varies significantly across this collection, from century-old wear to lightly used vintage copies, and anything worth knowing is noted in the listing.
How much are 20th century books worth?
Prices vary widely, from a few pounds for a common vintage paperback to significantly more for scarce first editions or early-century antiques. Rarity, condition and edition all affect value.
Do you have first editions from the 20th century?
Some of our 20th century stock is first editions, and this is always stated clearly in the listing.
Are 20th century books a good gift?
Especially for a milestone birthday: a vintage book published in someone's birth year makes a genuinely personal gift, and our Book Gifts by Special Year page can help you find one. For earlier, antique finds, matching the subject to their interests works better than chasing an exact year.
Do you ship internationally?
We ship worldwide, with free UK delivery on orders over £50, and every book is packaged carefully whatever its age or destination.
