Collecting Rare Books
“I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library.”
— Jorge Luis Borges
Age alone doesn't make a book rare. A small print run, a signature, an early copy of a well-known text, or simply having survived a couple of hundred years in good condition can each be enough on its own, and sometimes several of these come together in a single copy.
Beyond the antiquarian material, you'll find presentation and signed copies, early accounts of Scottish castles and clans, and out-of-print titles that simply haven't been reprinted since. Some of it is rare because of when it was made, some because of what happened to the copy since, an inscription, a bookplate, a previous owner worth knowing about.
Every book is inspected and photographed individually, and condition is described honestly rather than glossed over. New rare stock is added as it comes in, so it's worth checking back.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a book rare?
It's usually a combination of factors: age, a small print run, a first edition, a signature or inscription, or simply how few copies have survived in good condition. We note what makes each book in this collection rare in its individual listing.
How old are the books in this collection?
It varies widely, from seventeenth-century antiquarian texts through to twentieth-century collectable first editions, so there's something here whether you're after genuine age or a specific edition.
Do you have first editions or signed books?
Yes, our First Edition Books and Signed Books collections are dedicated to those more specifically, so it's worth browsing both if that's what you're after.
Do you have rare Scottish books?
Yes, our Scottish Books collection includes rare and antiquarian Scottish titles alongside more general Scottish interest books.
What's the difference between rare and antique?
Antique usually just means old, generally over 100 years. Rare is about scarcity, so a rare book can be old or comparatively recent, as long as few good copies exist.
Can I see the condition before I buy?
We photograph each book closely so you can see its binding, pages and wear before you buy. Condition varies with age and history, and anything worth knowing is noted in the listing. If you'd like more photos of a particular book, just get in touch.
Do you have rare book gifts?
Yes, our Rare Book Gifts collection is put together specifically for collectors and bibliophiles.
Do you ship rare books internationally?
Yes, we ship worldwide, and UK orders over £50 come with free delivery.
