Collection: Scottish History Books
Journey through Scottish history, from the wars fought for independence to the clan records and burgh histories of everyday life. It's a history shaped as much by battles and treaties as by the families who lived through the Highland Clearances and carried Scotland's story overseas. If it's history beyond Scotland you're after too, our History Books collection covers the wider picture.

Scottish history books: the wars, the Clearances and the everyday burghs
“History is the essence of innumerable biographies.”
— Thomas Carlyle
Scotland's history includes a nation that fought for its independence twice, entered a union with England that its own parliament voted for, and went on to produce a disproportionate share of the ideas that shaped the modern world, from economics to geology. There's a lot to get into.
You'll find histories of the early kingdom and the Picts, the Highland Clearances, town and burgh histories from Stirling to Aberdeen, statistical accounts and genealogical records, and antiquarian society publications going back over a century, including plenty of out-of-print titles you won't find outside a specialist shop. It's one of the deepest Scottish history collections we carry.
Every book is inspected and photographed individually, with condition described honestly. New stock is added all the time.

What kind of Scottish history books do you stock?
We stock national and early histories, Highland Clearances accounts, town and burgh histories, and genealogical and statistical records, plus much more.
Do you have books on a specific period or event, like the Jacobites or the Union?
Yes, our stock spans specific periods and events as well as general histories, so it's worth using the search bar above if you're after something particular.
What's the difference between this collection and your general Scottish Books collection?
This collection is history specifically. Our Scottish Books collection is broader, covering Scottish literature, poetry, genealogy and Gaelic-language books alongside history.
Can I see the condition before I buy?

Are these books useful for family history or genealogy research?
Yes, we stock statistical accounts, parish records and other genealogical material that can be useful for tracing Scottish ancestry, though we can't guarantee a specific family name will be covered.
Do you have Scottish book gifts?
Yes, our Scottish Book Gifts collection is put together specifically for anyone with a Scottish connection or interest.
How old are the books in this collection?
It varies hugely, from centuries-old antiquarian volumes through to more recent Scottish history titles.
