And The Cock Crew By Fionn Mac Colla 1945

Set in the fictional glen of Gleann Luachrach during the Highland Clearances, the novel centres on Maighstir Sachairi, a rigid Calvinist minister whose authority has reshaped the community, as a Lowland factor works to clear the glen's tenants for sheep farming. Caught between his religious convictions and his responsibility to his flock, Sachairi faces a mounting crisis of conscience as eviction looms. Fionn Mac Colla (the pen name of Thomas Douglas MacDonald, a founding member of the National Party of Scotland and close friend of Hugh MacDiarmid) is regarded for this, his best-known novel, a landmark exploration of Calvinism's repressions and the erosion of Gaelic culture.
