This biography of David I (reigned 1124-1153) examines his role in reshaping Scotland's governance, church, aristocracy and economy (his introduction of Anglo-Norman feudal structures and settlers, expansion of royal burghs, and reorganisation of the Scottish church), framing him as the medieval king most responsible for creating the institutional shape of the later Scottish kingdom. Richard Oram, Professor of Medieval and Environmental History at the University of Stirling, is a prolific historian of medieval Scotland whose other works include "The Lordship of Galloway" and "Alexander II: King of Scots".
