A hiker narrates his repeated encounters, across several decades from 1913 onward, with Elzéard Bouffier, a solitary shepherd in a desolate Provençal valley who has taken up the singular task of hand-planting acorns and tree seeds, entirely without recognition or reward. Jean Giono's tale was so convincing that it was widely mistaken for a true story, a misconception the author deliberately allowed during his lifetime before confirming in 1957 that Bouffier was invented "to make trees likeable". Giono waived his royalties so the story could be freely reprinted, and it later inspired an Academy Award-winning 1987 animated film.
